How do creators protect their work in Canada, and can AI work be copyrighted?

Canadian copyright protects original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works in a fixed form. CIPO lists photographs, motion picture films, screenplays, computer programs and software among them.

You can register a copyright with CIPO. A certificate of registration is evidence that the copyright exists and that the person registered owns it, though a court can challenge that evidence, and CIPO does not examine the claims. Using the © notice is not mandatory in Canada. The general term is the author's life plus 70 years, extended from 50 on 30 December 2022.
